Toronto Kids' Martial Arts Classes
Kung fu teaches kids to adopt a physically fit lifestyle, provides a productive outlet for burning off their boundless energy, builds their confidence, focus and self-esteem and teaches them how to defend themselves from bullies, should the need arise.
Raising children in the age of video games can be challenging for a parent who understands the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle. Kung fu is a great way to encourage children to trade the ease and comfort of a sedentary lifestyle for a more active one. The Bamboo Kung Fu School children’s martial arts classes, taught at convenient locations in Scarborough and downtown Toronto, introduce boys and girls age 6-12 to a fun, exciting way to stay fit. Children 13 and older are also welcome, and are included in our adult kung fu classes. At Bamboo Kung Fu School we teach Choi Lee Fut kung fu. This style of kung fu integrates more than 100 movements, like short and long-range punches and kicks, which provide a full-body workout and strengthen growing joints and muscles. Kids have fun and make new friends while also developing strong, healthy bodies and essential social skills.
Curious about what kung fu can do for your child? See the kid's kung fu class schedule at both locations. Then register your son or daughter for a free, introductory kung fu class.
Choi Lee Fut kung fu is an effective way to create healthy bodies and promote an active lifestyle, but it is proven to be just as effective at building character.
Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem
Social interaction can be painfully awkward for children who suffer with low self-esteem and lack confidence in their abilities. Each day is fraught with anxiety about the child’s inability to perform -in school, on the playground, and eventually, at work. Children struggling with issues of confidence and self-esteem often:
- Avoid new tasks or challenges for fear of "failing" at them.
- Give up easily when a task gets hard, rather than risk being seen as “incompetent”.
- Act bossy or controlling in an effort to mask feelings of inadequacy.
- Blame other children, a parent or a teacher, rather than taking responsibility, trying harder or asking for help.
- Dread competitive games, which they often find stressful.
- Make disparaging remarks about themselves and are extremely self-critical.
- Obsess over what others think of them.
- Are highly-susceptible to peer pressure.
- Are more likely to be victims of bullying.
Poor self-esteem can have a negative impact on children's performance in school and their ability to succeed in competitive sports. Most importantly, a child who lacks confidence frequently grapples with feelings of inadequacy as an adult.
How can you help your child build his or her confidence and self-esteem?
Provide your child with opportunities to take on new challenges and to develop competency at a variety of tasks. Kung fu provides children with many opportunities to do just that.
"Bamboo Kung Fu engaged students and their families in an introductory demonstration class at Timberbank Jr PS for T&F Family Night. Kin, our instructor, was both encouraging and patient. He was able to work with students and adults of various ages in our class and modify the techniques to the abilities of the group. Bamboo Kung Fu also provided important literature on the importance of health and back safety to prevent injuries and strains that are caused by our everyday lives. We were delighted that Kin and Bamboo Kung Fu were able to be a part of our family and community event that focused on mental health, physical fitness, and emotional well-being. Thank you again, Bamboo Kung Fu" ~ Timberbank Jr Public School
Physical activity, combined with a sense of achievement, has a positive effect on a child’s self-perception. In the children’s kung fu classes at Bamboo Kung Fu School, each child takes on small goals at first. As each goal is achieved, the child earns well-deserved praise. He or she is eager to take on the next challenge, and then the next. Each success builds the child’s confidence and buoys his or her self-esteem. This increased confidence has a positive effect in all aspects of the child’s life. Discover what kung fu classes can do for your child’s confidence. Attitude is Everything
Choi Lee Fut kung fu is deeply grounded in Chinese culture, which stresses the need to develop self-discipline and demonstrate respect for others. These important qualities help children become well-rounded individuals. Students learn self-discipline and how to conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates respect for themselves, their instructor, fellow students and their environment. These lessons translate to life outside of the classroom and build life-long habits. Children who absorb such principles are less likely to bully other children, or to stand for being bullied. It’s no wonder that many of our students’ parents have reported a remarkable improvement in their children’s attitude and behavior.
"If you are looking to learn a system of martial arts that is practical and efficient, I highly recommend coming to learn at Bamboo Kung Fu. Sifu Kin Sze is an excellent teacher, who engages his students and patiently trains them according to their level of skill and fitness. He is very knowledgeable and you will learn and improve each time you come here. The other students are also very friendly and helpful giving the school a serious, but welcoming, atmosphere that you would like to be in to learn and train. The Scarborough school, which I attend, is near Pacific Mall and also quite accessible and it takes me approximately 10 minutes to drive there from North York. Overall, if you want to improve yourself physically and mentally, Bamboo Kung Fu is the place to be." ~ Matthew Yan, Ph.D. candidate, North York, Ontario
